NEWPORT, R.I. (November 28, 2017) – Members of the Board of Directors of BankNewport and the Salvation Army Newport Corps recently gathered to celebrate the acquisition of a new 12-passenger van. BankNewport funded the van, essential for the Salvation Army Newport Corps to fulfill its human services mission throughout Newport County.
Originally established in 1889 on Broadway in Newport, the Newport Corps operates numerous programs from its facility at 51 Memorial Boulevard. Services are free of charge and include hunger relief programs, heating assistance and clothing vouchers, senior and veterans services, youth academic and enrichment programming, in addition to holiday baskets and toy distribution.
Last year, the Newport Corps served 5,105 food pantry clients, 2,723 soup kitchen clients, 15,654 daily bread pantry clients, 504 youth through the Kids Club, in addition to providing Thanksgiving baskets for 215 families and Christmas toys and food for 180 families.
