NEWPORT, R.I. (November 14, 2017) – BankNewport extended a $5,000 grant to FabNewport to help fund a FutureLab pilot program, an extension of their popular after-school program. BankNewport Executive Vice President of Digital and Technology Strategy, John Sullivan recently joined FabNewport Executive Director, Steven Heath for youth demonstrations of their mastery of design technology.
FabNewport’s FutureLab pilot summer program offered nine youth ages 10 to 15, the opportunity to refine their skills in 2D and 3D design and advanced manufacturing. The youth used computer controlled routers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and 3D printers, to design and manufacture products which they old on Tuesdays at the local farmers market.

The FutureLab program also focused on growing the students physical fitness and career awareness. They pedaled over 300 miles, including a trip from Providence to Bristol, visited two dozen businesses, learned how to swim and make hammocks. The program culminated with a showcase at FabNewport’s Annual Maker Party.
