MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (August 17, 2017) – BankNewport Vice President/Middletown Branch Sales Manager, Linda Buchanan recently joined Newport/Fall River Star Kids Scholarship Program representatives, Karen Flanagan, program director and Cindy Babka, board member and mentor, for a visit with youth participating in an academic after-school activity held at All Saints Academy in Middletown.  BankNewport extended $10,000 in grants over the past two years in support of academic and enrichment programming for Star Kids.

After-school, tutoring, mentoring and summer camp programs are important aspects of the Star Kids Scholarship Program.  Offerings are designed to ensure that children feel connected to the school community, and have enriching outlets to become confident, well-rounded students who are exposed to new experiences.  After-school activities for Star Kids include musical instruction and recitals, plays, sewing, reading and writing workshops, ski and snowboard lessons and local team sports.  One-on-one academic tutoring is offered to meet the individual needs of each child.  Tutoring helps students improve academic and behavior outcomes, decreases anxiety, increases school attendance and aspirations for higher education and a career.
