What to Know About Contactless Cards

What is a Contactless payment? +

Contactless payments use short-range wireless technology to make secure payments between a contactless card or payment-enabled device and a contactless-enabled checkout terminal. Customers can tap their card near the Contactless Symbol and their payment is sent for authorization. Contactless cards also come with a chip and magnetic stripe, so you can insert your card or use the magnetic stripe if a terminal is not yet contactless-enabled.

How do I know if my card is equipped with Contactless technology? +

Simply look for the Contactless Indicator on the front of your card.

Where can I pay with a Contactless enabled card? +

You can use your Contactless card anywhere you see the contactless payment symbols. This includes:

  • Fast food restaurants
  •
  • Gas Stations
  •
  • Convenience stores
  •
  • Pharmacies
  •
  • Stadiums
  •
  • And more!

If you don't see the symbol, your contactless-enabled card can still be used by inserting your chip card or swiping at checkout.

How do I pay with a Contactless card? +

When you are ready to check out, you can simply tap your card at the enabled terminal. The card should be within 1-2 inches of the terminal; however some terminals function best if you tap the Contactless enabled card to the terminal itself.

How long should I tap? +

You only need to hold your card to the terminal for 1 or 2 seconds.

Is tapping safe? +

Contactless payments offer the same security as EMV Chip transactions.

Can I use my Contactless card in my digital wallet? +

Yes, if you add your Contactless card to your digital wallet, you can tap to pay anywhere you see the Contactless Symbol displayed.

Why should I use Contactless payments? +

Contactless payments are fast, simple and secure! A Contactless card offers:

  • Convenience: Merchants across the U.S. are increasingly able to accept Contactless cards for payment.
  • Protection: When you tap to pay, your card has the same advanced encryption and safeguards as the chip on your card.
What if I don't want to or can't tap to pay? +

You can still transact by swiping or inserting your card at check out. We've simply added Contactless payments as a new, easier way to pay.

Do I need to request a Contactless card or will BankNewport send one to me? +

New consumer debit card customers and current customers who are reissued a card will receive a card with the Contactless feature.

Can I get a card without the Contactless feature? +

We no longer offer cards without the Contactless feature. Please note that you can continue to insert or swipe your card in chip-enabled terminals.

Are there any additional fees for the Contactless card? +

No, the Contactless feature is included at no additional cost.

How do I use my card to make a purchase over the phone? +

Using your Contactless card to make a purchase over the phone or online is the same process you would use for a chip card. Simply provide your card information to authorize the purchase.

How do I prevent the wrong card from being charged? +

If you have more than one Contactless card in your wallet, you should remove the specific card you would like to use rather than tapping your wallet against the reader.

Can I unknowingly make a purchase if I am in close enough proximity to a contactless-enabled checkout terminal? +

No. Contactless technology requires the merchant to first initiate the payment, and the contactless card must be held in close proximity (1 -2 inches) to the terminal for a transaction to take place.

Will my chip-enabled debit card work at the ATM? +

Yes. You will be able to use your card to get cash, check your balance and more. Be sure to insert the chip end of your card into the ATM with the chip facing up.

Can I still swipe my card to pay? +

Yes. If a merchant is not yet chip-activated, you can swipe your card to pay. Then enter your PIN. Or select CREDIT and sign for your purchase (if necessary).
