What are the main features of Samsung Pay®?

Samsung Pay® allows you to use the Galaxy S6, S6 active, S6 edge, S6 edge+ or higher and Note 5 to make in-store mobile payments through the use of proprietary built-in technology. It spans locations where merchants accept tap and pay because the technology works on new card readers as well as most of those that have been in place for years.

How does Samsung Pay® work?

Samsung Pay® uses proprietary technology that works with both Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Near Field Communication (NFC) to make contactless mobile payments. MST and NFC enable the Galaxy S6, S6 active, S6 edge, S6 edge+ or higher and Note 5 to make transactions at most card readers where you can swipe or tap your card, excluding gas station pumps.

Where can I use Samsung Pay®?

Samsung Pay® works almost anywhere you can swipe or tap your card. Note that Samsung Pay® does not currently work at gas station pumps where you have to insert your card, but it will work at most gas station cashier card readers.

Which devices can I use with Samsung Pay®?

Samsung Pay® allows you to use compatible Samsung phones and Gear smartwatches to make in-store mobile payments through the use of proprietary built-in technology. It spans locations where merchants accept tap and pay because the technology works on new card readers as well as most of those that have been in place for years.

How do I get Samsung Pay®?

Samsung Pay® is automatically installed through a software update for eligible devices. Please visit the Samsung Pay® site for a full list of compatible devices.

How do I make in-store purchases with Samsung Pay®?

Start by either swiping-up from the home button or opening the Samsung Pay® app from your home screen. Next, select the card you want to pay with. Then, verify using your fingerprint and hover your device about ½ inch over the card reader where you’d usually swipe or tap your physical card to complete the transaction. If you prefer, you can set up Samsung Pay® to use a Personal Identification Number (PIN) instead of your fingerprint for verification.

Can Samsung Pay® make online or in-app purchases?

Not yet. Currently Samsung Pay® can be used for in-store payments only.

Do I need to be connected to the internet or a cellular network to make a payment?

No, an active internet connection is not required to make in-store purchases, but your device should connect to the internet at least once per day to ensure that Samsung Pay® stays up to date and remains active. Samsung Pay® does require an active internet connection to activate the app or add a new card.

How is my default payment card in Samsung Pay® determined?

The last card you made a purchase with in Samsung Pay® will automatically appear as the card that would be used the next time you open the app. However, you can always swipe between all the cards you have added and select a different card before making a purchase.

Does BankNewport charge anything to use Samsung Pay®?

No. BankNewport does not charge a fee for customers to use Samsung Pay®.

How can I keep track of purchases I’ve made with Samsung Pay®?

Most transactions made through Samsung Pay® are viewable shortly after processing, for one month from the time of purchase. Simply open the app and tap on a card to see the last 10 Samsung Pay® transactions made with that card. Additionally, a push notification with transaction details will be sent to your device after each Samsung Pay® purchase. Note: Push notifications require an active internet connection.

How do I add my card?

Cards can be easily added to the Samsung Pay® app by using your device’s camera to scan in your card’s information, or by manually inputting the card information yourself. If requested, follow any additional steps to verify your card.

Can I use multiple BankNewport cards with Samsung Pay®?

Yes, you can use up to 10 cards with Samsung Pay®. You can easily switch between cards whenever you make a purchase.

Why am I being asked to verify my BankNewport card?

For security reasons, we may need you to provide additional verification to add your BankNewport card to Samsung Pay®. If necessary, the Samsung Pay® app will tell you how to verify your card.

Once your information is verified, you will see an on-screen message that your card is ready for Samsung Pay®.

Which phones support Samsung Pay® on the Samsung Gear?

Android phones running Android OS version 4.4 and above support Samsung Pay® on Samsung Gear smartwatches through the Samsung Gear app. The devices must have the most up-to-date version of the Samsung Gear app installed.

How is the Samsung Pay® app different from the Samsung Gear app?

The Samsung Pay app controls the Samsung Pay® service on the phone, which includes which cards are added, transactional history, etc. The Samsung Gear app is a separate app on the phone that enables customers to manage their Gear smartwatch. It controls the Samsung Pay® service on the Gear smartwatch, which also includes what cards are added, transactional history, etc.

How do I add a card to my Gear device?

Open the Samsung Gear app on your phone.

Tap Samsung Pay®.

Tap Add Card.

Take a picture of the card, or manually enter the card number, cardholder name, expiration date, CVC/CVV code and zip code.

If requested, follow any additional steps to activate and verify your card. Samsung Pay® requires that Gear users activate a security PIN to use the service. If you do not already have a PIN, you will be asked to create one.

Are the cards that I have already added to my Samsung phone for Samsung Pay® also available on the Gear smartwatch?

No. You cannot directly import cards which have been enrolled in Samsung Pay®. Adding a card to Samsung Pay® on your Samsung phone doesn't automatically add the card to your Gear smartwatch. Conversely, adding a card to your smartwatch doesn't automatically add the card to your phone. However, the same card can be added separately to both your Samsung phone and the Gear smartwatch. Or, you can add a card to your smartwatch and not add it to your phone.

What if my BankNewport card is lost or stolen?

Call BankNewport at 401.845.2265 or 877.709.2265 and we will cancel your debit or credit card immediately. To report a lost/stolen Visa® Debit Card after hours, select option 3. You can also deactivate a lost/stolen card online by logging in to Digital Banking. Instant Issue replacement cards are available at all of our branch locations during our normal branch business hours. Replacement cards that are mailed are available in 7-10 business days or rush orders can be placed for a nominal fee. You should remove the card from Wallet. After you receive your new replacement debit or credit card, you’ll need to add your new card to your phone.

What if my Samsung device is lost or stolen?

If your device is lost or stolen, you can use Samsung’s Find My Mobile service to try to find it. We recommend remotely disabling the cards from Samsung Pay®.

We also recommend notifying your mobile carrier and calling the BankNewport number on the back of your card promptly. Mention that you added your card to Samsung Pay® so we can disable your card for use with Samsung Pay®. If you locate your device, you will need to add your card back to Samsung Pay® before making any Samsung Pay® purchases.
